1. Assess your current use of freelancer workers.

Maybe you already rely on gig workers; maybe you don’t. Either way, if you’re seeking to increase workforce flexibility, you’ll need to take a holistic view of your current use of freelancers. “Companies first need to understand what their current usage of contingent workers looks like,” says Kara Hertzog, president of IES, a payroll and HR administration services company. “Many businesses engage these workers in silos and do not have comprehensive visibility into how many contingent workers are actually being used.”

After taking stock of your existing usage and spend, evaluate both in the context of longer-term business goals. Do you have the right number of workers to achieve your objectives in the next three years? Tools such as ADP’s WorkMarket and SAP’s Fieldglass can help you manage workers and determine the volume that works best for you. When you understand the skill or resource gaps you’re facing, you can create a plan to address those with contingent labor.
