Staffing in the wake of the recession

The recession has had substantial lingering effects on U.S. hiring strategies, resulting in businesses complaining that they can't find skilled workers even though unemployment remains high.

Businesses should take the time to carefully craft an effective staffing process – one of the most vital elements to a business' overall health. Hiring managers should not operate as if they have the upper hand, advises Inc. magazine. Do not neglect to provide fair wages and adequate benefits. Kevin Wheeler, founder and CEO of the recruitment consulting firm Global Learning Resources, told the source that smaller firms have the advantage of providing employees with more variety and flexible work schedules.

Another important consideration when hiring is determining whether the positions will be filled by full-time, part-time or temporary workers. Part-time and contract workers offer employers flexibility and can support overworked regular staff members. The source reports that the number of qualified temporary workers in the technology, engineering and financial services sectors is reaching an all-time high. Additionally, temporary workers are a valuable resource when staffing short term projects.
