How to Ready Your Company for Potential Overtime Pay Changes

Does your company pay overtime? If so, it’s a good time to pay attention to politics.

In May, the House of Representatives approved the Working Families Flexibility Act of 2017 (H.R. 1180) by a 229-to-197 margin. Introduced by Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL), the bill would allow employers to offer paid time off instead of time-and-a-half pay for overtime work to eligible hourly and salaried nonexempt employees. The Senate has received the bill but has yet to vote on it.

Although the bill is now in the Senate’s hands, the House version could benefit both employers and employees. Still, Democrats and employee groups have valid concerns. If the bill becomes law, HR leaders will need to ensure both parties abide by it.
