5 workplace trends to be thankful for

Professionals spend most of their adult lives at their jobs. Working for a living, in any corner of the world, is ingrained in most cultures as a right of passage. In more developed areas of the globe, working in an office is an everyday occurrence. While employees may frown at the idea of a repeated 9 to 5 job, recent research suggests changes are coming to the modern-day workplace.

Here are five aspects of today's workspace that employees should be thankful for: 

  1. Working from home: Thanks in part to cutting-edge technology, employees now have the ability to work just as effectively from home. Telecommuting is becoming a regular aspect of modern-day office culture, and with cloud-based servers, smartphones and live chat capabilities, employees can remain connected to their coworkers at all times throughout the working day.
  2. Paid sick leave: According to U.S. News and World Report, paid sick leave isn't necessarily required by federal law. While some employees have always had that amenity, truth be told, not every job provides its employees that option. That said, paid sick leave has become a modern-day workplace mainstay for employees because it promotes a healthy lifestyle, which can improve productivity and morale. Employers don't want ailing staff members to come into work and potentially affecting other staff members, either.
  3. Follow one's own path: The connective power of the Internet has made networking and launching one's own business a viable reality. Nontraditional career paths are still risky business, but if a professional decides to leave his or her full-time job to pursue outside interests, that option is a definite possibility, thanks in part to the Web. 
  4. Businesses are embracing mobile: Similar to the fact that employees can work from home, employers are now embracing mobile technology, particularly when it comes to recruitment. Millennials are known for always being on their phones, and a great way to reach them is by interacting on portable devices. A recent study conducted by Beyond.com found 77 percent of job seekers use mobile job search apps to find future employment. Employees are using mobile devices more and more to interact with the world around them, which is why companies are using mobile technology to engage with potential hires.
  5. Working hours are more flexible: Traditional office hours typically fall between 9 am and 5 pm, but digital technology adoption in the workplace is changing that. Since employees can connect with their office servers easier now than ever before, which has helped business productivity. It has also softened the differentiating line between work and personal lives, but employees now have the flexibility to work when they see fit.

Businesses that have adopted, or plan on integrating these principles are leading the way in the modern-day office space. From a recruiting standpoint, it can be easier to find potential hires if companies use these characteristics to bring in new talent. Workers now have a lot to be thankful for, especially if their company is following these workplace trends.
