Daily Habits That Will Make You Happy to Be at Work

Forming new habits takes time and effort, but once you get there, it shapes who you are. Learn to implement seven daily habits that’ll increase your happiness level at work.

  • Eat and Drink Healthfully

Whether you’re too busy to eat, mindlessly snacking, or indulging in a colleague’s birthday treats, it’s important you eat healthfully daily. Block off lunch time on your calendar and use it appropriately. Pack your lunch and snacks whenever you can. Ask a colleague to hold you accountable for not eating office treats, or limit yourself to just one. Choose water or tea after drinking your first cup of coffee.

  • Exercise Regularly

Sitting all day affects your productivity. Your brain needs consistent bursts of activity to stay focused. If possible, hold walking meetings. Set movement reminders on your calendar, even if it’s just a lap around the office or some quick stretches. Begin a lunchtime exercise group. Ask your supervisor about getting a standing desk. All these activities work movement into your day.

  • Earn, Save, and Spend Wisely

Aside from buying lunch less often, making coffee at home, and walking or biking to work, take advantage of financial benefits your company offers. Block off time on your calendar to speak with HR and see what’s available. Ask about 401(k) plans and stock options as well as FSA and HSA accounts. Programs that automatically deduct from your paycheck are convenient ways of putting away money. If those options are unavailable, speak with an accountant about setting up your own savings programs.

  • Rest, Relax, and Enjoy

Physical, mental, and emotional rest is an important part of productivity. Your highest performance results from balancing work and life with rest and renewal. Try the rule of 52 and 17 – work diligently for 52 minutes, relax for 17, and repeat. If you feel the need for caffeine, take a break to recharge instead. If you can’t take a power nap, take it easy after leaving the office.

  • Stop Procrastinating

People typically procrastinate because they’re afraid of making mistakes, they don’t feel like doing something, or they don’t like it because it’s hard or boring. Imagine how much less guilt, stress, and frustration you’ll feel by doing the things you don’t want to do when you have to do them. Find out what your reason is and take care of your to-do list. You’ll feel better when you leave the office for the day.

  • Simplify, Clear, and Organize

Nothing good comes from having a mess on your desk. Clutter is a distraction that enables procrastination and other bad habits. Improve your efficiency by clearing away unnecessary items and organizing your space. File or delete documents on your computer as well.
