3 booming temporary jobs in health care

According to a recent report by Staffing Industry Analysts, the health care field enjoyed the fastest-growing temporary employee revenue in the U.S. in February. Three staffing segments in health care showed significant growth in a year-over-year analysis: travel nursing, per diem nursing and allied health care.

The health care field in general is undergoing a period of growth and subsequent demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by 2022 the nursing profession alone will have grown 19 percent from 2012, which means there will no doubt be demand for more temporary workers as well. Hospitals and other health care organizations should know which kinds of temporary employees to take on.

Travel nurses
Travel nursing is a concept built out of necessity because of the shortage in registered nurses. The idea is to provide temporary respite to areas experiencing a shortage of medical professionals. According to American Mobile, assignments last anywhere from eight to 26 weeks. According to the Staffing Industry Analysts report, in February 2015, travel nursing experienced a growth in revenue of 17 percent over February 2014.

Per diem nurses
Per diem nursing started out as daily contracts, with nurses picking up shifts where they were needed. The position has evolved to include contracts for blocks of shifts weeks in advance or even long-term positions. Per diem nurses enjoy flexibility in their schedules and in choosing their workplaces. The year-over-year revenue growth for this temporary job was 8 percent in February.

Allied health professionals
According to, allied health professionals make up 60 percent of all health care providers. These workers fall into two categories: assistants/technicians and therapists/technologists. The former, as their name implies, work under the supervision of the latter. This job experienced temporary worker revenue growth of 15 percent.

Depending on a hospital's individual staffing needs, one of these three kinds of jobs may make a good fit within an organization.
