Manufacturing companies are discovering the benefit of adding temporary workers to their production teams. Because many products are in demand seasonally – such as motorcycles and lawn care equipment in the summer – some companies are ramping up production months in advance to help them adjust to the demands of the market.

Harley-Davidson recently announced hundreds of temporary positions at their motorcycle production plants in the Midwest and East, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported. At the Menomonee Falls, Wis. plant, 100 workers are being added for the winter and spring and 160 employees will work for a similar time period in Tomahawk, Wis. At the manufacturing and assembly plant in York, Pa., 400 workers are being hired.

The employees are being hired to help the company deliver bikes in time for peak riding season, according to Harley Spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim

Another Wisconsin company, Kohler Co., is hiring workers to manufacture engines for their lawn care products, which will be in high demand in the summer, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal reported.

Because an employee's stint with a company gives managers a sense of their talent and working habits, some manufacturers will offer full-time positions once the work is up. These employers are using the tactic to build skilled and dedicated workforces.
