The vast majority of hourly workers around the world believe their employers have violated laws or rules governing overtime and compensation, according to a recent study by the Workforce Institute at Kronos. HR administration for global companies may consider how their policies and payrolling are affected by this trend.

Most employees are somewhat aware of the legislations and company policies surrounding additional hourly work and the concept of overtime is relatively universal around the world.

The survey took into accounts responses from workers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Mexico, the U.K., and the U.S. In every region outside of the U.S., the majority of hourly employee said their employers had at some point violated overtime rules and/or laws. Forty-seven percent of surveyed workers in the U.S. agreed, according to the study.

While employees enjoy the option of working additional hours for higher rate of pay or more paid time off, the survey found many of these individuals are actually required to work overtime. Sixty-eight percent of people in India surveyed said working additional hours is part of the job and 67 percent in China and 58 percent in the U.K. agreed.
