Controller, Payroll & Billing

Primary Function

The Controller is responsible for providing leadership for the payroll, billing, and accounts receivable departments while fostering an environment of open communication and teamwork across the company.

Our corporate office is in San Diego, California.  This position will work remotely and is open to candidates nationwide. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides leadership and management to ensure that the financial mission is followed.
  • Directly leads and manages Payroll, Billing, and Accounts Receivable departments & ensures controls and automations are in place to maximize efficiencies.
  • Oversees training and identifies training needs.
  • Relentlessly finds and implements new efficiencies to enable scaling.
  • Facilitates cross-departmental communication and collaboration.
  • Analyzes pricing and margin to evaluate and support improvement opportunities that will drive profitable growth at scale.
  • Leads all aspects of bank audit and examination field work. Reviews related reports and provides applicable management responses.
  • Establishes positive employer-employee relationships and promotes a high level of employee morale, trust and integrity.
  • Develops policies and procedures that scale with an increasing set of challenges through the company’s lifecycle
  • Participates in the strategic and financial planning process across the company.
  • Provides visibility and accountability for the financial performance of the business
  • Ensures that the operating infrastructure is in place to support the achievement of financial targets and long-range plans aligned with the organization’s strategic plans
  • Advisor on any contracts into which the company may enter.
  • Researches and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local corporate, multi-state payroll, and other applicable taxes, including emerging legislation that may affect the company’s policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Requirements

  • Staffing or PEO industry experience.
  • Payroll processing company experience will be considered
  • A. or B.S. Degree in Business, Finance or Administration, with at least 10 years’ experience in business.
  • 10+ years’ leadership experience
  • Strong knowledge of multistate payroll processing and related payroll taxes
  • Strong knowledge of US-GAAP required.
  • Strong knowledge of billing processes and subsequent collections
  • Experience working with integrated ERP systems
  • Experience developing, instituting, and maintaining internal controls
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Adept at negotiations on contracts, leases, equipment, etc.
