Temp workers provide benefits for the technology sector

InformationWeek's second annual State of Information Technology Outsourcing Survey reported that respondents are three times more likely to have the ability to add a contractor than they are to bring on staff.

The survey found that 72 percent of respondents said they use temp or contract workers, with 45 percent saying it's a new approach for their companies, according to coverage of the report by IT Business Edge.

Michael Healey, president of Yeoman Technology Group, noted in InformationWeek that giant service providers like IBM and HP find themselves competing against nimbler, hungrier startups and pros working through individual marketplaces.

Plus, contingency hiring firm Yoh notes that many employees are contemplating a shift to the temporary market as a way to improve their career and income prospects. As others recognize the possibility for success and follow suit, there will likely be a domino effect in wage acceleration.

Yoh, which recently released its quarterly index of technology wages, found that demand for temp workers has increased, and that there was a clear bottoming out of falling technical wages in the tech sector.
